Immediately after installation, a turbocharger is entirely vulnerable: it’s still dry, so the first start-up causes immense wear and tear until the oil finally takes effect, LIQUI MOLY reports. This is why LIQUI MOLY has developed its turbocharger additive. It serves a single purpose: to protect the new turbocharger from wear and tear at the first start-up. It contains a very high concentration of the solid lubricant MoS2. This MoS2 sticks to the metal surfaces of the bearings, ensuring lubrication the first time the turbocharger runs. This prevents failure while at the same time increasing the turbocharger’s lifetime. Before the oil supply line is connected, the oil inlet bore of the turbocharger is filled right to the top with turbocharger additive. The additive is suitable for all turbochargers and can be mixed with all engine oils, so it can be used for every turbocharger replacement. Harry Hartkorn of LIQUI MOLY said: “Using this additive is very straightforward but offers huge benefits – so it’s recommended every time a turbocharger is exchanged or repaired. “The alternative would be a turbocharger with dry bearings. “This not only causes a massive increase in wear and tear: it can also result in preliminary damage that drastically shortens the service life of the turbocharger. “Anyone who would like to do their turbocharger some good after installation can add a can of Cera Tec to the engine oil. “This is a wear-and-tear protection additive that provides dual protection for the engine. “Firstly, it physically reduces friction in the engine because it contains tiny ceramic particles that spread out on the metal surfaces in a protective manner, thereby reducing direct contact between metal and metal. “These ceramic particles are so tiny that they easily pass through the oil filter and even the very smallest oil holes. “Secondly, Cera Tec chemically reduces friction in the engine because it contains so-called friction modifiers that chemically smooth the metal surfaces. “Not only does the engine as a whole benefit from these characteristics, the turbocharger does, too. “Cera Tec also reduces friction in the latter, increasing service life and reducing the risk of damage in the event of insufficient oil supply to the turbocharger because it improves the emergency operating characteristics.”
